Microsoft to Retire Remote Desktop App from Microsoft Store

Microsoft has officially announced that it will end support for the Remote Desktop app available via the Microsoft Store on May 27, 2025. After this date, the app will no longer be available for download or installation, and connections to Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box through this app will be blocked.

However, this change applies only to the Remote Desktop app downloaded from the Microsoft Store. It does not affect the Remote Desktop client standalone installer (MSI), which will remain available for download. Users can still access it from the Download and Install the Remote Desktop Client for Windows (MSI) page.

Why is Microsoft Replacing the Store Version?

Microsoft is shifting to Windows App, which offers a more streamlined and feature-rich experience, including:

  • Unified access – Manage Cloud PCs, virtual desktops, and other Windows environments from a single interface.
  • Better usability – Supports customizable home screens, multimonitor setups, and dynamic display resolutions.
  • Enhanced remote work features – Includes device redirection, Microsoft Teams optimizations, and easy account switching.

How to Prepare for the Transition

For Windows 365, Azure Virtual Desktop, and Microsoft Dev Box Users

  • Get Started: Review the Get Started Guide for step-by-step migration instructions.
  • Download Windows App: The app is available via the Microsoft Store or directly from the Windows App page.

For Remote Desktop Users

  • If you rely on the Microsoft Store version of the Remote Desktop app, switch to Remote Desktop Connection until Windows App supports this functionality.
  • If you prefer, you can continue using the standalone Remote Desktop client (MSI installer), which remains supported.

For Remote Desktop Services Users

Users connecting to Remote Desktop Services should use RemoteApp and Desktop Connection until Windows App includes support for this feature.

Check for Known Issues

Microsoft acknowledges that some features from the Remote Desktop app are not yet available in Windows App. Users should check the Known Issues and Limitations page regularly to track updates and feature rollouts.

Uninstalling the Remote Desktop App

Once users switch to Windows App, they can remove the Microsoft Store version of Remote Desktop. Microsoft provides instructions for different uninstallation methods in the Uninstall Your Apps and Remove Apps documentation.

IT Administrators: What to Do Next?

  • Encourage users to switch to Windows App as soon as possible.
  • Update internal documentation, user guides, and help desk materials to reflect the changes.
  • Monitor feature updates and known issues to ensure a smooth transition.
